Learn how Super Cruise works and how to use it responsibly on vehicles equipped with this feature.
How it Works
Super Cruise offers the largest hands-free driving network in North America, including both divided and non-divided highways.
- The Super Cruise driver assistance technology uses precision LiDAR map data in addition to real-time cameras, sensors and GPS to maintain control
- Super Cruise is only available on compatible roads
- Super Cruise uses GPS with real-time corrections and map data to determine the vehicle’s location, while the Lane Sensing Camera detects the marked lanes on the road. This helps the vehicle steer and keep its lane position
- The system works with your vehicle’s Adaptive Cruise
Control†, which is designed to detect vehicles traveling in the same direction as your vehicle and accelerate or brake the vehicle to maintain a driver-selected following gap time from a vehicle ahead, even in stop-and-go traffic
- When it is engaged, Super Cruise uses a Driver Attention System that monitors the system status and works to detect your head and eye positioning, reminding you to pay attention to the road and steer manually when needed
Remember, when you’re using Super Cruise, you must pay attention while driving and should not use a hand-held device.
Super Cruise requires a working electrical system, cell reception and GPS signal. After the initial Super Cruise trial included with vehicle purchase ends, it also requires an eligible
Using Super Cruise Responsibly
- Super Cruise is a driver assistance technology. Your complete attention is always required while driving. Do not use a mobile device while you are driving, even when Super Cruise is engaged
- You will need to take steering control in the following situations when using Super Cruise:
- When encountering unusual traffic situations or objects
- When merging into traffic
- When exiting the highway
- When making a turn or stop for crossing traffic or a traffic light, stop sign or other traffic control device
- Super Cruise does not steer to avoid construction zones. Always be ready to take action, and take over steering or apply the brakes
- Some state and local laws may not permit hands-free driving. In these locations, you may still use Super Cruise by lightly holding the steering wheel at all times. Always be aware of the rules of hands-free driving in your area
- Sometimes, like when you are approaching an intersection, Super Cruise uses a high-precision map to alert you to take control. Stay engaged and vigilant at all times while driving
- Some of the highways will include limited intersections and traffic control devices. In the cases of railroad crossings, pedestrian crossings, stoplights or stop signs, Super Cruise will alert you to take back control of the vehicle. It’s important for you to stay focused and aware at all times while Super Cruise is in use
